Hertfordshire Championship Semifinal – St. Colmcilles v Cambridge Parnells – 21st August 2016

Saints book place in Championship Final

St. Colmcilles GAC prove too strong for Cambridge Parnells and book place in Hertfordshire GAA Championship Final

A warm Sunday afternoon in Stockwood Park, Luton played host to this year’s Hertfordshire GAA Championship Semi-Final between Cambridge Parnells and St. Colmcilles GAC.

Cambridge topped their group by beating St. Dympnas the previous week however the St Albans side finished runners-up in their group after a narrow defeat to Éire Óg, Oxford. The Saints needed to bounce back quickly after that loss and definitely showed that they had in the early moments of the match.

Early points from Adrian Cooney, Joe McGauley and Paul Barrett followed by a goal from Chris Griffin gave them an early lead in the opening 10 minutes. This was the Saints chance to get to their first Championship final in 5 years and they were determined to make the most of it.

Cambridge did chip in with points of their own as they came in to the game more but further points from Jason Donnelly, Cooney, Barrett and McGauley and goals from Conor Carney and Cooney stretched the lead and made it a score line of 3-08 to 0-03 at the break.

It was more of the same in the second half as St Colmcilles continued to dominate the game and extend their lead. Cambridge continued to try and make inroads into the match, scoring a few points but goals from Barrett, Donnelly and substitute Joe Deacy along with a number of points from Griffin, Donnelly, Cooney, Barrett, Deacy and substitute James Thompson ensured the win was certain. Final score was 6-18 to 0-07.

Manager Kevin Devlin said that it was “a great performance that showed plenty of skill, ability and determination right to the final whistle”.

The St Albans side now face St. Dympnas of Luton in the Championship final on the 11th September. The Saints who have a very strong side will be looking to win their first Senior Hertfordshire Championship in 10 years when they come up against the Luton men.
